Kiss Me Kate
We went to see a musical called Kiss Me Kate. It was based on a Shakespeare play called The Taming of the Shrew, and it was basically actors pretending to be actors!
The Taming of the Shrew is about a woman called Katherine who doesn’t want to marry and hates men (very naughty in Shakespearean times!). A man called Petruchio marries her for her money and eventually they fall in love.
Kiss Me Kate is about a man called Fred and a man called Bill and a woman called Lili. Fred and Lili are divorced and have to play Petruchio and Kate, and Bill plays the lover of Kate’s sister, Bianca (played by a woman called Lois). Bill is a gambler (and Lois a flirt!) and he signs an I.O.U. in Fred’s name, causing two thugs to come and join the cast. Fred uses this to his advantage saying if they make Lili – who is threatening to quit – stay in the play, he will pay them off. Lili is forced to do the play at gun point, and after being rescued by the head of the U.S. Army (her new boyfriend) she returns to fall in love with Fred (and for the final scene of both plays). The End.
I enjoyed this play a lot. It was very inspiring.
